School Health Office Sick Policy (New Jersey Guidelines)


The purpose of the health office is to support student wellness and ensure a safe learning environment while minimizing the spread of illness in school. The following guidelines outline when students should be referred to the nurse and when they may be sent home.

When to Keep Your Child Home / When Students Will Be Sent Home

Please keep your child home or expect dismissal if they have:

• Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Persistent cough or difficulty breathing
• Rash of unknown cause
• Red, draining eyes (possible pink eye)
• Untreated contagious illness (such as strep throat, flu, or impetigo)
• Injury that requires medical evaluation
• Not well enough to participate in class

Return to School Guidelines

Students may return to school when:
• Fever-free for 24 hours without medication
• No vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours
• Symptoms have improved and student can participate in school activities
• Cleared by a healthcare provider if required

Parent/Guardian Communication

• Parents/guardians will be notified for significant illness or injury
• Emergency contacts must be up to date
• Students must be picked up promptly when dismissed
• Medication Policy
• All medications must be:
• Physician-ordered
• Parent-authorized
• Properly labeled and stored in the nurse’s office Students should not carry medication unless authorized.

Emergency Situations

The school will call 911 for serious conditions such as:
• Difficulty breathing
• Severe injury or head trauma
• Unresponsiveness
• Seizures

• Students must have a pass to visit the nurse (except emergencies)
• The health office is not a rest area
• The nurse will assess all students and determine if dismissal is needed
• Parents/guardians will be notified for:
o Fever
o Head injuries
o Vomiting
o Significant illness or injury
