Principal's Message

The Golden Door Charter School was founded in 1998 as one of Jersey City’s first charter schools. Located at 180 Ninth Street, our state of the art building serves as a wonderful learning environment to roughly 500 students in grades kindergarten through eight.

The Golden Door Charter School was founded by Bret Schundler (former Mayor of Jersey City and current New Jersey Commissioner of Education) and was based on the simple convictions that a first-rate education is the right of every individual, that all children can learn, and that every child should be challenged to reach his or her full potential. The overall goals of the school are to:

Mrs. Fanny Lopez-Assistant Director & Mr. Brian Stiles-Chief Academic Officer
  • Demonstrate the benefits of academic achievement that public school students can routinely attain when the advantages of charter school governance are coupled with ambitious new academic standards
  • Offer Jersey City families a rich new choice in public education
  • Offer a professional setting for teachers that permit them to succeed in accomplishing high academic gains for their students

The Golden Door Charter School is proving that every child can succeed when given the right opportunities. Inside bright and colorful classrooms, dynamic teachers engage elementary and middle school students in fast-paced and highly interactive reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science and character education lessons that have been aligned closely to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

Foreign language, music, and the arts broaden students’ understanding of the world in the tradition of the classical liberal arts education. In addition, health and physical education broaden student awareness of the importance of healthy living. Students are on the cutting edge of technology in our computer lab where the latest technology is taught by a certified teacher of technology/media specialist. A fully integrated character education program contributes to a safe and orderly learning environment.

Teachers are also held to a very high standard. Specific program implementation is vital to the academic success of our children. Teachers are required to participate in regular professional development and program training in order to ensure proficiency in curriculum implementation. The Golden Door Charter School schedules regular professional development for its teaching staff. In addition to a five-day, pre-service training in August, half-day in-services are also scheduled and implemented throughout the school year (usually the first Wednesday of each month). In addition to our group professional development, Golden Door requires all certified teaching staff to complete and fulfill a Professional Development Plan (PDP). Teachers are expected to determine their areas of improvement, write a plan to address these areas and fulfill the objectives/activities required in order to improve professional performance.

The Golden Door Charter School offers an extended school day and extended school year. Instruction begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Our school year consists of 190 school days, usually beginning the Tuesday after Labor Day and ending in late June.
